Lymphoid leukemias can be divided into acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), depending on the stage of maturation of the neoplastic cells. Lymphoid leukemias are a form of neoplastic lymphoproliferative disease (neoplasia resulting from overproduction of T or B lymphocytes or natural killer [NK] cells). Malignant lymphoproliferative diseases are some of the most common types of neoplasia in dogs, accounting for approximately 40% of all canine neoplasia. Neoplastic lymphoproliferative disease can be divided into three major subtypes: • Lymphoma • Plasma cell tumors • Primary lymphoid leukemias Of these, lymphoma is the most common, comprising approximately 83% of canine hematopoietic neoplasia. Primary lymphoid leukemias are less common, comprising approximately 10% of hematopoietic neoplasia in dogs.
